The Western Agriculture Shows Focus was on Climate Readiness
The Ministry of Agriculture held the 2017 Western Agriculture from 08-10 November at Koroivolu Ground in Nadi with demonstrations of live animals, crops and farming management practices.
The Western Agriculture Shows focus attention was on the need for the implementation of adaptation mechanisms for the sector amidst challenges posed by climate change.
The shows theme being “Climate Smart Agriculture for Fiji”, it promotes the basis of resilient and sustainable agricultural practices for climate adaptation and mitigation.
The event, which was previously held at national level, is being organized at the divisional level to allow farmers in rural areas to participate and learn from the Show.
The public was invited to benefit from the various displays at the Western Agriculture Show which included the Extension, Animal Health and Production and Research Divisions of the Ministry, as well as other Ministries and stakeholders.
Students from selected schools in the Western Division participated in oratory contests on the second day of the Show while farmer awards was held on the third day.
The event, among other things aims to promote agriculture in the country and provides the Ministry a platform to publicize its services and to encourage more farmers to venture into farming as a business. The show closed at 8pm daily to allow more participation by the public.
Nadi Primary School took part in the oratory and poster competition and managed to bag both first prize. Apenisa Naisoro first prize for oratory and Pranit Sharma first prize for poster. It was a most memorable moment for Nadi Primary School as they took part in both events and came out on top.
