Plant Today, Peace for Decades
One simple plant has a lot to gift us and overall it increases the quality of life on Earth. This year, on the International Day of Peace, the Nadi Scouters Council Nadi Scouters Council were given 200 mahogany saplings by the Fiji Hardwood Industries. The saplings were planted in Nawaicoba by the scout and scout leaders. The saplings were planted in the farm and in Nawaicoba Public School. The trees were also given to the participating schools and planted in the respective schools. The project was fun filled and also developed a sense of responsibility towards the environment in which we live in amongst the participants.
Mahogany is a non- indigenous plant that was introduced by the Fiji government in the early 1950’s to keep the forest cover intact and at the same time boost Fiji’s economy. Fiji’s tropical climate is well suited for Mahogany trees. Mahogany is a multi- purpose tree as it has dense wood, acts as a good wind breaker, provides shade and also has varied ornamental purposes. It takes 25 years for a mahogany tree to mature unfortunately; it is not replanted at that same rate.
