Petaling District 80km Expedition

Petaling District 80km Expedition

Petaling District 80km Expedition Starting point: Taman Botani Negara, Shah Alam Ending point : Sri Kuala Lumpur International School, Subang Jaya This expedition is one of the requirements for the highest achievement for a scout in Malaysia, the Pengakap Raja (King's Scout) badge. Each day would have checkpoints that would lead you to a school at the end of the day. This school is where you will be sleeping for that day. In between checkpoints there are tasks that have to be completed in order to proceed to the next checkpoint. This expedition will test the scout's physical limit to complete the expedition as well as their mental limit in terms of their determination. Although that was the main reason for the expedition, I still had a wonderful experience during the hike. On the first day, we started off in Taman Botani. This was the first time I saw my patrol members in real life and I was very excited to finally meet them face to face. I didn't expect this expedition to be easy, however I wrongly underestimated it's difficulty. Around 20 minutes into the hike I started to feel the weight on my shoulders. Soon one of my patrol members felt a sharp pain on her shoulders. We stopped and moved some weight off her bag into one of ours while she tightened her shoulder straps. On the second day, we started our hike around 6. The most memorable part of day 2 was the stretch we were walking during the evening. During the evening, we went by a long residential area. It was a remote area so there weren't many people around. It was a painstaking 1 hour walk through the residential area with nobody around us, just occasional cars passing by. The only thing worse than the walk itself was the doubt in me. We've been walking for almost half an hour without seeing any of our scouters. I was worried that we took a wrong turn and we had to turn back. It was a long way back to the last checkpoint. Soon we saw a scouter driving by to check on us. All the fear in me instantly vanished as I knew then that we were going the right way. On the third day, we left at 6. Since we were the last patrol to arrive on day 2, I was determined not to let that happen again. My patrol seemed to share the same enthusiasm. We started strong throughout the morning. When it was lunchtime, the scouter in charge was impressed by our performance that day. After that, we continued our journey, which took us to Subang Jaya, the area where the final checkpoint for the day is. As we kept on walking, we passed one of the fastest patrols of day 2. We saw them having a rest. Although we yearned for that rest, we pushed on to prevent being last again. However, we met bad omen when we reached the last checkpoint. There was a problem with our map so we had to fix it before we proceeded to our task. We were the first to reach the final checkpoint before the school, but when we left we became the third due to the time taken to fix the map. In the end, we became the third to arrive the school at around 4:30. On the last day, we left at 7. This marks the last day of our expedition and I was super excited. Today's walk was a short one to a lake nearby and then to a mosque. At both checkpoints we did a bit of community service and cleaned up the place. After that we went back to the school. I still remember carrying the garbage bag when it broke. All the fluid from the garbage bad dripped onto my pants without me noticing. I only realised after having a wet feeling at my calves. To be honest, it was quite funny. We reached the school at around 9. This marks the end of the expedition. This expedition was a real challenge and I'm proud to say it's a challenge that I passed. I would like to thank the organisers as the expedition was very well planned. I have learnt a lot from the expedition, such as communication, motivation and most of all, determination. I was surprised about how I could work with people I just met as I don't usually talk to people that well. Overall it was a wonderful experience and I feel that I've had lots of benefits from it.
