Messengers of Peace in India Recycle Plastic Waste

In 2014, the Scouts and Guides of V.P.S. High School in Maharashtra, India, organised a recycling project to raise awareness of the impact plastic waste has on the environment. Thirty-five Scout Messengers of Peace were assigned to this month-long project. Between 15 November to 15 December, they collected plastic waste from the school premises and from their homes. Bags, gloves and masks were distributed to every Scout, who would also collect plastic waste wherever and whenever they saw it. By the end of the project, they collected a total of 317 kg of plastic waste. One of the local organisations, Lonavla-Khandala Citizen Forum found out about the project and visited the school. They sent everything that was collected for recycling and paid the Scouts Rs 50 for every kilogramme, which came to a total of Rs 15 850. The money was shared among the Scouts who used it to pay their fees, reducing the economic burden of their parents. Every Scout who participated in the project received a certificate of appreciation for their participation.
