Marine Debris Project

Marine Debris Project

Moonaboola Sea Scouts have teamed up with the Tangaro Blue Foundation to be part of the Great Marine Debris clean up. We have selected a section of local beach which we visit once a month. During our visit we clean up the section of beach looking for large pieces of rubbish and scavenging for all the small pieces too. Once we have collected the rubbish it gets classified into selected groups. We then record the total so that it can be entered into an online database. This database can be accessed by scientists world wide for their research. Part of our project is also creating awareness in our community about the dangers of litter in our oceans. We have created displays that show how sea animals see plastic bags as jelly fish, we have created posters to put on local community notice boards near the beaches and we have been part of local events such as the Whale Festival.
