MAKUENI, KENYA, UPSCALES GREEN GOLD

GREEN RISING WORKSHOP facilitated by the The Kenya Scouts Association and the World Scout Bureau Africa Support Centre at Embu, Kenya taught us that Kitchen Gardening can provide the much needed nutritious Vegetables and fruits even with little resources

The project has been implemented at the Kyanginywa Senior School, an institution located in the Lower Eastern part of Kenya that usually faces challenges such as drought and famine.

The Scout Leader who was part of the team that was trained during the Green Rising workshop trained the scouts in school who then embarked on a journey of transforming the bare school ground into a food source. They prepared the land by themselves, planted the seedlings and now they have allocated different patrols that take care of the vegetables.

The scouts grew Kales, Coriander, Amaranthus Dubois at the kitchen garden. So far they have been able to harvest 30kgs of vegetables which they offered to the school kitchen for local consumption. We are aiming at harvesting 100kgs in the near future so that we are able to feed the community around too.

Since the scouts come from the community around, some of them have already adopted the agricultural practices back at home.

Consistency yields fruit. Starting small, gradual growth is key to finishing great. It is possible!
