Kaprálův mlýn Scout Environmental Education Centre
Kaprálův mlýn (Kapral’s mill) is an international scout centre located in the Czech Republic (Europe) near the city of Brno, that is 150 km from Vienna and 230 km from Prague, the capital. The remote standing property is placed in the Moravian karst just few minute walk from outstanding natural phenomena: caves, underground rivers, wetlands, steppe grasslands and plant-rich forests. Due to karst landscape many habitats can be found close to each other. This is a paradise of every keen naturalist. The scout centre offers camping, accommodation in the lodge and guided environmental education programmes as well as opportunities for volunteers. It operates 2 model eco-friendly buildings and is member of the SCENES network (Scout Centres of Excellence for Nature and Environment). Its eco-friendly operations make it outstanding and model not only to scouts but also university students and construction professionals.
However, just few years ago this place was a ruin and many scouts wondered if it makes sense to invest resources into a ramshacle when the property was offered to the movement by Alex and Zdena Kapral in 1993. Businessman and former scout Alex Kapral bought the mill before WW2 to survive the difficult times in seclusion, but this did not work. He was imprisoned by Nazis in 1942 and the place became a battlefield in 1945 leaving over 250 dead soldiers and 60 horses in the ground.
After communists came to power, the Kapral's were forced to emigration and the mill was confiscated. The family got it back in 1993 in ruined condition and leased it to scouts for free. Tens of thousands hours of volunteer work were spent here by hundreds of (mostly) scout volunteers to turn the ruin into a scout centre but with no accessible funding (the structure was still private property). Though the improvements were sometimes slower than continuous decay, the scout centre started to work by mid 1990s.
In 2007 the property was given to scouts and this legal step opened way to reconstruction. In 2008 the project of turning the mill to scout environmental education centre was launched. For 4 years a small group of scouts was working days and nights to prepare plans and secure funding. Hundreds of volunteers were helping though some sceptics appeared too. In September 2012 the scout centre was re-opened with no less difficult task ahead: make the place financially sustainable while providing environmental education programmes not only to scout but to schools as well. It again took lot of time and effort but in 2014 the centre became a member of the SCENES network and in 2015 achieved financial sustainability partly due to low-cost eco-friendly operation. High quality standard of the environmental education programmes was recognised by certification in 2016.
Kaprálův mlýn offers opportunities to camp, volunteer and help local community and nature through conservation work while learning about eco-friendly operation. Come and breath the inspiration.
