Hong Kong Scout International Day of Peace 2019
Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace. World Organization of Scout Movement (“WOSM”) had been awarded the “UNESCO Prize for Peace Education” for its work on creating a culture of peace through youth education in 1981. The Scout Association of Hong Kong had taken the initiative this year to organize a public event to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, to provide access to justice for all and to build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
The Hong Kong Scout International Day of Peace 2019 was held successfully on 21 September 2019 at the Kwun Tong Promenade, a small oasis away from the busy district of Kwun Tong in Hong Kong. More than 1,000 scout members from different sections and parents joined the fun fair. The programme echoed the theme of the UN: Preventing Conflict through Climate Action. The programme started with an opening ceremony in which Mr Wong Kam-sing, GBS, JP, Secretary for the Environment of the Hong Kong Government encouraged all scouts to live an ecofriendly life-style. It was then followed by band shows and game stalls focusing different area of SDGs, including climate, justice, human rights and environmental protection.
“I hope that everyone will start focusing on environmental protection. If every one of us take a small action to reduce pollution, the accumulated force could be able to tackle climate change.” said the Chief Commissioner of Hong Kong, Mr Ng Ah-ming.
