HB 1336 - Ensuring Access to Broadband Internet in Washington State
Broadband internet has proven to be an essential part of 21-century life. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have relied on it for things such as recreation. As the COVID-19 pandemic has transformed our way of life, it has proven the need for high-speed internet in order to engage in actions such as remote education and remote employment. However, not everyone has access to high-speed broadband internet, particularly in rural or low-income communities within Washington State. Collaborating with a Washington State Legislator, I worked to garner grassroots support for HB 1336, a bill to help end this inequity by allowing for broadband internet to be provided as a government-sponsored service. In this effort, I've worked directly with the State Legislator as the bill was being created and organized 1000+ people throughout Washington State to advocate for this bill (number can be found using the included video URL). The bill successfully passed the Washington State Legislature with bipartisan support and was signed by the Washington State Governor on May 13th, 2021. With the passage of this bill, access to affordable broadband internet can now be a reality for the 7.7 million residents of Washington State.
