Harvesting for a Sustainable and Healthier Community
As part of Health Promoting initiatves and developing action plans it became mandatory for each class levels to update vegetable gardens. Year 8 children through scouting program in school in self sufficiency came up with the idea of harvesting and making their own meals every fortnight. Gradually the harvest from their seasonal gardens they began selling their produce to the teachers of Lautoks Primary School. The money collected from their sales was used to buy stationaries for the needy children in their own class and also a certain percentage was contributed to towards the school canteen that prepared meals for the needy children. Children learnt to plant and harvest dhania, cabbage, eggplant, chillies, bele, bhaji, and bean. they would attend to their gardens every morning and afternoon. there was even competition between the three streams of year 8 on achieving the highest sales through their harvest. Seeds and seedlings were donated throughthe Ministry of Agriculture, HPS initiated WHO and some of the parents. This action of the children addressed quite alot of the SDGs inspiring the youths to be self sufficient from a very young age.
