Gardens for Bulube School

The Bulube Scout Group based in the Tanga Location, in Butterworth, Eastern Cape is led by Scouter Nokwanda. The Group embarked on a Food for Life project, with a team of 47 Scouts and two laymen. They focused on re-establishing the school‟s unused garden. With the funding the Group bought insecticides, tools and seedlings. They planted vegetables and the garden produced a variety of vegetables ranging from cabbages, spinach, beetroots, onions, green peppers, tomatoes, carrots and potatoes. In preparation of the project the Group leader Nokwanda attended a permit phase training and warrant course in Port Elizabeth. With the knowledge acquired at the training she was enabled to strengthen the development of her community. The project is helping fight poverty and the Group wishes to produce more vegetables for the learners and the community at large. The Scouts are now equipped with new knowledge and they have learned how to make trench beds, when to plant the seedlings and how to produce vegetables. They are proud that during the learning process they were able to advertise Scouting within the community. Scouts take turns weeding the garden and removing the drooping leaves to make compost, while others volunteer to water and look after the garden during weekends and school holidays.
