Food for Life - Strandfontein
Strandfontein Primary School Scout Group in Mitchell‟s Plain established a vegetable garden, compromising six trenches. The Cubs and Scouts helped dig trenches under the supervision of Adult Scout Leaders and parents. The soil was prepared by using manure, compost and various other fertilizers. Since the establishment of the garden project, pupils are learning new gardening skills and how to take care of their environment. The project has become the talk of the school and to date the entire school now benefits from the garden. The garden is also used as an outdoor classroom to learn about gardening and life skills. The vegetables grown are cooked to make soup that feeds the learners and the children of the nearby orphanage home. This is now an ongoing project, and it has brought together a network of different people ranging from learners to school officials and various other organisations.
