Food for Life in KZN

Amathole South Eastern District embarked on an Environmental Awareness Campaign and Tree planting project led by Scouters Zola Mvinjelwa and Nonkuthalo Mndai. Phase one of this project was the environmental awareness. And phase two was the tree planting which up to now has been delayed due to the diverse geographical area and financial constraints. Groups have been identified in the district, Group leaders have been selected to organise the planning and identify areas where the trees will be planted, and they will be reporting to the District. The project will be launched in October to commemorate Arbour Day. Amathole District municipality has partnered with the Scouts. During the awareness campaign Scouts have learned about the importance of protecting the environment. One of the schools that participated on the campaign, Macibe Senior Secondary School has now started a fruit tree project that will be benefiting the whole school. Other schools that took part have now joined the Eco School’s Project, which is facilitated by Scouters (who are also the teachers that run Scouting in schools) and the project is about environmental education in the class. Others have entered Environmental competition that is run by Department of Water Affairs.
