DESPRENDETE

Desprendete was founded on June 30, 2020, in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, where Honduras found itself in a sanitary and economic crisis, a group of youths decided to take the led on an initiative focused on helping families in rural and urban communities of low income, as well as Honduran vulnerable groups, by providing immediate assistance in the form of food baskets and hygiene kits, while promoting education in rural and urban communities, and in hospitals, through educational talks, such as preventive spread measures of COVID-19. For young pregnant women, information on the proper care during pregnancy. Furthermore, we have also performed projects focused on helping children continue with their education by providing them with school materials. What started as a project now aims to be a legalized institution.

Mission

Our purpose is to provide assistance to families, children, and adolescents in rural and urban communities of low resources, through material donations and education, in order to help them improve their quality of life and better their environment.

Vision

To create awareness and action in the society of social problems that involve global collaboration, while simultaneously promoting quality education in both rural and urban communities, and in medical and special aid centres in Honduras. We plan to be an organization that seeks to lessen the high percentages of economic and education inequality in Honduras.

Specific Objectives (short-term)

  1. Provide assistance in the form of donations according to the categorized needs of vulnerable groups (nursing homes, orphanages, hospitals)
  2. Be a source of help to the people living in slight to extreme poor conditions through food donations and hygiene materials to ensure their well-being.
  3. Create empowerment in rural community adults and adolescents through education and leadership opportunities in which they can develop their cognitive skills, similarly, to encourage material independence so they can subsist without the help of external entities.
  4. Visits to hospitals to give information (pamphlets) and educational talks to miscellaneous groups, about topics related to their medical situation (e.g. pregnant women about pregnancy and postpartum care).

Specific Objectives (long-term)

  1. Be a legalized organization known as one that promotes education in rural communities of low income.
  2. Create self-sustaining projects in rural communities according to their most evident needs (lack of clean water, inadequate community hygiene, scarcity of food resources).
  3. Create programs that encourage work done by people in rural settlements as a method that serves for economic equality and opportunity equality.
  4. Be part of the system that aids adults and children in hospitals with medical chronic diseases, tentatively through medical brigades.

Direct Beneficiaries

  • Rural and urban communities of low income (in the souther zone of Honduras)

  • Vulnerable groups in hospitals, nursing homes, and orphanages.

Breakdown of our completed projects

  1. Visit and deliver of our "solidarity kits" to the rural community "Aragua" in Ojojona, municipality of Francisco Morazán: we delivered 30 food baskets, given to 30 different families. “Aragua” was chosen during a meeting with the Parish Priest of Ojojona, due to its high level of poverty and isolation from natural resources such as clean water.
  2. Delivery of 105 lunches at the Instituto Hondureño de Seguridad Social: the food was delivered to the medical team in the emergency room, COVID-19 emergency room (to doctors and patients), and to the security and cleaning staff. The IHSS was chosen due to its large number of patients and the urge to attend the patients immediately.
  3. Delivery of 20 "solidarity kits" and 20 personal "hygiene kits" to the rural community "Ojo de Agua" in Yaguacire, municipality of Francisco Morazán. In addition to the delivery of the food baskets and personal hygiene kits, we gave an educational talk in which the Desprendete team taught how to correctly wash a commercial mask (surgical or KN95) and how to adjust it to the face if it is too big, mostly for children. They were also given a pamphlet (with illustrations to avoid confusion if people are illiterate) containing symptoms of COVID-19, isolation measures to be taken if someone in the household contracts the disease, how to wash their hands correctly, and contacts they can reach out to if they present symptoms.
  4. Delivery of 60 snacks (sandwich, cookies, and juice), cake, and piñata to the pediatric emergency room, pediatric orthopedics, and pediatric neurosurgery room in the Hospital Escuela Universitario on the Honduran children’s day with the purpose to share valuable time with the children on this special day.
  5. Delivery of 40 "my mom and I" kits for the project “Apoyando a la vida" in collaboration with another nonprofit. A study was conducted on the situation of pregnant teenagers in the maternity ward of the public San Felipe General Hospital, in Tegucigalpa. It was determined to create “care kits” with products for the newborn and likewise, to provide women with essential information (pamphlets) on pregnancy and postpartum care, and information on what to do in risky situations such as if someone abused them in any way (physically or emotionally) and contacts to which they can turn to.
  6. Due to the catastrophic disasters Hurricanes Eta and Iota caused in the northern area of Honduras, we created the project “Sanando a Honduras” that focused on receiving donations primary of hygiene items, baby products, clothes for both children and adults, and toys for the kids to play with since they have been through a psychological trauma as well. After all the material equipment was received, the donations were delivered in El Progreso, Yoro (a greatly affected area).
  7. Delivery of 30 "kits solidarios" and 25 "kits escolares" from our project "Aprendiendo Juntos". This project was focused on helping 25 kids from 1st to 6th grade in an elementary school in Ojojona, by giving them essential school materials and books that will help them develop certain skills corresponding to their grade level. Likewise, each family representing each student also received a "kit solidario", which represents a food basket for 5 members for 2 weeks.
