CORAL REEF PROPAGATION AND PLANTING

Based on our expertise and knowledge, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu niche area is marine and oceanography. We believe the project initiated by our effort will give awareness and impact to a community and world. The project is ‘Marine Awareness: Coral Reef Propagation and Planting’ in which using coral platform for coral to propagate and regrow into another colony. Coral reef propagation is accessible to a range of aquaculturalists, including aquarists seeking to propagate ornamental species sustainably, large commercial operations and impoverished coastal fishing villages seeking alternative sources of income. Propagation of corals, particularly through asexual reproduction or ‘fragging’, is a simple process and does not require elaborate equipment or specialized skills. Thus, coral propagation can be easily practiced in developing parts of the world, which are commonly associated with greater amounts of reef degradation as a result of destructive fishing activity and high pollution levels. For this coral reef propagation and planting in Pulau Bidong can spread awareness of the importance of its existence to the community. It also can be model for learning process as everyone manages to explore and learn about its importance to the ecosystem balance. Besides, this project will supervised by Yayasan Coral Malaysia and Central Laboratory, Universiti Malaysia which are willingly to help in term of advice and support. The project is also collaboration with Kumpulan Latihan Kelanasiswa UTHM as organizer. The Project will help to develop new Coral Farm in Pulau Bidong. The benefit of the project is:
  • The create new marine habitat
  • Allow the researcher to do their research on this area
