Annual Community Service Project at Sri Munneshwaram Devasthanam, Sri Lanka

This time we gathered only 5 Leaders and 25 senior Scouts because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. A troop meeting was called for informing the scouts about the event and for making them aware of how to behave at the Kovil under quarantine rules. Also the duties to be fulfilled at the kovil were divided among the scouts. On the same day scout’s parents were informed and their permissions were taken. Since we were provided with the transport, meals and refreshments by the kovil we did not had to bother about any expenses and all the material resources were provided by the camp organizers.

On the day before the project, another meeting was called and the scouts were given a clear idea of what’s going to happen at the Kovil. Each and every Scouts was given separate duties and responsibilities to be fulfilled on the project day. They were grouped into two so that they can work to shifts as they will have to be standing the whole working period.

We all gathered at the apartment where we were going to stay during the resting hours and at night which was located near the Kovil at around 7:00am, had a rally hoisting the scout flag, got the register marked and then again the scouts were given a small description about the event and reminded them their responsibilities. Also a T-Shirt and a mask was given to the Scouts to wear when they were on duty.

Then the scouts serving for the first shift, left to the kovil and scattered to the main doors of the kovil, to the places where offerings are offered and outside near the kovil main door, as advised during the previous meeting. We started the service with sweeping the kovil and also later swept whenever it got unclean. Scouts who were outside the kovil made sure that the devotees do not remove their footwear everywhere in the kovil ground but instead they had those to remove near the gates.

Scouts who were at the gates checked the devotees with the thermometer and the mask. Scouts who were at the main doors were checking whether the devotees remove their foot, head wears, wearing the masks properly and wearing a proper outfit before entering the kovil. And the Scouts did not forget to clean the hands of devotees with sanitizers. Scouts who were inside the kovil were directing the devotees to go the worship areas within a 1 meter distant and to the offering areas in an orderly manner so that the rush can be minimized and also it can protect the social distancing. Each of us was ready to help the devotees with any information they would need. While one group of scouts was serving at the kovil the other was resting at the campsite. At both these places District Leaders and CEO were helping me with the scout’s protection. In the evening scouts joined the religious parade of the kovil helping it by clearing its route. During the whole day our meals were supplied on time by the kovil and we had to prepare the dinner by ourselves with the raw materials provided by the kovil. Devotees who were glad with our service gave us fruits and sweats which we collected to a bucket as we did not wanted to be eating during our working hours.

When the parade returned back to the kovil we finished our service and returned back to camp’s campsite where the scouts were allowed to clean themselves. Then they had their dinner and after that the fruits and sweats that the scouts collected were shared among them.

The same process was carried out during the 7 days and on the last day they were gathered under the flag and thanked for the good service they provided by hand over a valuable Certificate.
