Scouting is a voluntary, nonpolitical, educational movement for & of young people– open to all without distinction with the purpose, principles and method conceived by the founder Lord Baden Powel. Scouts are aging between 5-25 years and supported by young mind adult leaders. Scouting, since its inception 111 years ago, started with the mission to respond and address the needs of the community throughout the world. The principles of scouting is duty to God and soil, duty to self, duty to others which is intrinsically linked to SDGs: the universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Unknowingly, these positive actions contribute towards SDGs such as: Scouts initiated in different type of skill based lucrative projects for rank advancement of Scout programs and to achieve proficiency badges. These include startups and agricultural projects. Moreover, we are helping people of remote villages with cattle farming. We raised funds, distributed goat kids, and arranged training on cattle farming etc. to help villagers living under poverty line there without any distinction. Outcomes of the work is visible and those people are self-dependent now. These contribute effectively towards achieving Goal 1: No Poverty, Goal 2: Zero Hunger, Goal 8: Decent wok and economic growth, Goal 10: Reduced inequalities. Scouting, as one of the world’s leading educational youth movements. Scouts arranged formal and informal education programs for street children –like the Ticket to Life project. We raised funds to set up primary schools, distribute free educational materials, provide with scholarship, arrange training sessions on math, ethics, history, culture, primary hygiene, ICT etc. to ensure quality education for less privileged children. This contributes most effectively towards (the SDG) ‘Goal 4: Quality education’ through its non-formal education that empowers young people to develop their full potential. Scouts play the vital role in national vaccination programs, celebrate health day, nutrition day and related programs, as a part of their commitment to serve and Scouting programs. We are trained on first-aid, food nutrition and food safety to help our neighborhood. Scouting for food program involves collection and distribution of food for starving and suffering from malnutrition. Scouting for Food is a project rooted in the very foundation of the Scouting movement and its dedication to implement the Scout Slogan and do a good turn daily. This years old practices will accelerate the progress towards Goal 3: Good health and well-being. Over 40 million Scouts including 1.7 million Scouts of Bangladesh advocating Gender Equality, human rights, inequalities free society through rally, seminar, social awareness building campaigns and most importantly being goodwill ambassadors for rest of the society to accelerate progress to Goal 5: Gender equality and Goal 10: Reduced inequalities. Scouts are thrifty. In Bangladesh and other part of the world, Scouts are taking part in Energy and Power Conservation camp to make people aware of responsible consumption and conservation of energy. This action is serving Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production for sure. Camping is the most exciting event of Scouting. Since the inception during camp days patrol of Scouts organizes projects like health and social awareness building campaigns (CJK Project), road and temporary wooden bridge, free medical camps, tree plantation programs, city and neighborhood cleanup campaigns, beach and seashore cleaning campaigns, river and lake cleaning projects, forest and wild animal conservation campaigns etc. Our participation in emergency response is also remarkable. These activities continued since ages and going to boost the progress towards achievement of Goal 11: Sustainable City and communities, Goal 13: Climate action, Goal 14: Life below water, Goal 15: Life on land. To promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development Scouts are involve in Messenger of Peace initiatives. This initiatives are contributing to achieve Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institution. Lord Baden Powell told us, “Leave this world a little better than you found it.” SDGs are inherently linked to all the values of Scouting, maybe the things we say every day, what we do – Creating a better world!
