#LifeLeaders: Explore - Connect - Understand

The Problem Stage of the Impact Innovators focuses on applying empathy in identifying issues or concerns of the community. It lets Scouts connect with their communities to help them understand the needs of the people and environment, ultimately defining a clear problem statement.

Sixteen Scouts from Lualu Rover Circle 9 and San Isidro National High School Outfit 189 conducted an exploration of the San Luis community in Pampanga to uncover its key issues and concerns. During their visit, they observed the local environment and engaged with residents through interviews to gain deeper insight into the community’s challenges. Following their exploration, the Scouts identified pressing issues they are passionate about addressing: literacy and waste management.

“It feels wonderful that during the Problem Stage, we were able to connect with the residents of the Sitio. In that situation, we empathized with the harsh realities of living in a community lacking proper waste management and facing issues of children’s illiteracy.” -Lance“I realized how important it is to really understand the problems happening in my own community. At first, I thought I knew what the main issues were, but when we did the community walk and interviews, I discovered deeper challenges.” -Renz

Despite the challenge of communicating with other people, the Scouts managed to bring out the needed information to formulate their problem statement. They collaborated effectively, listening closely to the concerns of the locals and asking thoughtful questions to deepen their understanding. The Scouts are now ready to take the next stage to become Impact Innovators.
