(Every week, I interview a new Scout or Guide from around the world to learn more about how Scouting or Guiding impacts on their life) Santiago Scout Juan has been Scouting for the last 12 years. Starting in 2002, after being brought along by his parent – he’s still doing it today. Both girls and boys do Scouting together where Juan is, every Saturday for a few hours. “I love it, meet my friends, camps, all the nature games... I can't imagine my life without Scouts” he said. Scouts in Chile have four age sections, where Pioneros and Caminantes only are both girls and boys together: • Manada/Bandana - Lobato/Golondrina (Cub Scouts/Brownies) – ages 6-11 • Tropa/Compañia - Scout/Guia (Scouts/Guides) – ages 11-15 • Pioneros (Senior Scouts) – ages 15-17 • Caminantes (Rover Scouts) – ages 17-20 A Lobatos group is named Manada (Pack) A Golondrinas group is named Bandada (Flock). A Scouts group is named Tropa (Troop) A Guides group is named Compañía (Company) Troops and Companies are divided on work teams, of 8 people named Patrullas (Patrols), led by a Guía de Patrulla (Patrol Guide). In this section, boys and girls can achieve some Especialidades (Merit Badges). A Pioneros group is named Avanzada (Advanced). These groups are subdivided on Comunidades (Communities), led by a Coordinador (Coordinator). A Caminantes group is named Clans, and are subdivided on Equipos (Teams), led by a Vocero (Spokesperson). Last year Juan was lucky enough to go to the National Jamboree in Chile, where he made some of his best friends who he keeps in touch with – even though they live 500kms away. Scouts has given the opportunity for him to believe he can do anything. In addition to being a photographer and taking some amazing shots of Scouts, Scouting is something that Juan wants to do in 50 years’ time!
