Youth-Led Peace and Inclusion in Mozambique

This project was inspired by the urgent need to restore dignity, hope, and opportunity to youth affected by violent extremism in northern Mozambique. Witnessing the exclusion, trauma, and economic hardship faced by displaced communities and host populations, we felt compelled to act. Our goal was to empower young people, especially women as agents of peace and resilience, equipping them with skills, voice, and purpose to rebuild their lives and strengthen social cohesion.
The project was implemented through a coordinated effort between AAAJC and local partners in Tete and Cabo Delgado. Youth volunteers facilitated reconciliation workshops, vocational trainings, and community dialogues. Local leaders and government officials were actively involved in planning and supervision. Activities were conducted in host communities and IDP centers, with continuous monitoring and feedback sessions to ensure impact and inclusion.
We learned that youth empowerment must go beyond skills, it requires trust, inclusion, and visibility. Women’s leadership proved essential in shifting community attitudes and promoting peace. Coordination with local authorities and religious leaders strengthened legitimacy and sustainability. Most importantly, we saw that when youth are given tools and voice, they become powerful agents of resilience and reconciliation.
