Hurricane Sandy hit with devastating force and wiped out neighborhoods along the eastern coast of the USA.  Realizing the best way to teach a value is to role model it, the two Cub Scout units of Belchertown MA -- Pack 57 and St Francis Pack 507 -- (WMass Council BSA) quickly decided to gift wrap gifts for a small donation.  These donations would then become gift cards for the victims to use as they needed. Within a week the plan was firmed up, publicity sent out and families began to amass ribbons/wrapping paper/tape/materials to gift wrap.  St Francis parish donated the hall and on December 8 and 9 from 10 am to 4 pm, the two units, with Akela and leaders helping, gift wrapped packages. While the Cubs thought it was great fun they also knew there were Scouts  and their families who  were relying on the kindess of strangers.  No matter the age level/rank, the sentiment was 'to help' along with the message of Christmas, which is giving unto others. Currently the coffers stand at $ 260 with a thank you in the town newspaper stating Secret Santas could still donate to this worthwhile endeavor.  We'll keep you posted as to how this turns out and who our adopted Cub Scout unit is.
