Wavecrest PS building readers for life
The Scouting-in-Schools team aimed to help learners at Wavecrest Primary build literacy, confidence, and a love for reading. By introducing creative and structured activities, the Yeboneers encouraged participation, critical thinking, and imagination. The project offered learners an opportunity to explore books, develop comprehension skills, and experience the joy of reading in a supportive environment.
Activities included reading, writing, and comprehension exercises; using dictionaries; exploring books; and participating in discussions and creative storytelling. Yeboneers facilitated each session, helping learners stay engaged, navigate challenges, and gain confidence in their literacy skills. The project reinforced reading habits and fostered collaboration among learners, showing the value of teamwork and mentorship in learning.
The adventure highlighted the importance of providing structured literacy support. Learners were challenged but motivated, and Yeboneers learned how to guide a large group while adapting explanations to individual needs. The project demonstrated that even small interventions can spark curiosity and build confidence. Overall, it emphasized that mentorship, patience, and creativity can transform learning experiences and make reading an enjoyable journey.
