Vegetable Garden for Iris House Children's Hospice
Jamie Berteler has a heart for children with serious illnesses> For his Springbok community service project he wanted to make a positive impact on the community at Iris House Children's Hospice in Bellville by creating a vegetable garden for them so that their meals could be enriched with fresh vegetables every day.
Jamie and his team built several new planter boxes from wood which they transported to Iris House and installed. They repaired the fence that surrounded the previous vegetable garden and also repaired and reinstalled two gates to the garden. They recreated the old vegetable garden patch by installing cement stepping stones. Once all this was completed, they filled the planters with a mixture of existing and fresh soil and replanted the vegetables from the old garden and added a few new plants.
The team brushed up on their carpentry skills when they built the planter boxes. They also brushed up on their home maintenance skills when they repaired the fence and gates by straightening and repositioning some of the fence posts and restoring the two gates to allow them to function properly again.
