UE-BSP Outfit 1331 Mangrove Tree Planting and Coastal Clean-Up Activity
Last January 19, 2019, the University of the East-Manila Outfit 1331 organized a Mangrove Tree Planting and Coastal Clean-Up Activity in collaboration with the Girl Scouts of the UE-Manila Chapter. Twenty-three (23) senior scouts and twenty-one (21) girl scouts attended the said event accompanied by Outfit Advisor Scouter Jeff Sherwin F. Francisco, Assistant Outfit Advisor Scouter John Kristoffer B. De Jesus, SCouter Anayln F. Familaran and Scouter Anna D. Alvarez.
The scouts attended a short orientation discussing about the correct way of planting the mangrove trees (rhizophora mangle). Mangroves are planted to protect shorelines from damaging storms, hurricane winds, waves, and floods. They also help prevent erosion and maintain water quality and clarity.
Before reaching the bay, the scouts trailed a muddy track before being able to go plant the mangroves. Each Scout were to plant 15 branches of a mangrove which will serve its grow as a tree after 10-15 years.
After the planting is done, the Scouts conducted a coastal clean-up to help conserve clean water in the lake and reduce trash to save the marine life and the well-being of the locals who live nearby.
After finishing all the assigned tasks, the scouts and scouters safely traveled back to the University of the East-Manila where they all parted to go home.
