Sustainable Senior Gardening

Spending time with elderly patients, many of whom struggled to find motivation or meaning later in life, inspired me to create an opportunity to re-plant that missing sense of excitement. Wanting to promote sustainable practices that matter now more than ever, I chose to upcycle giving our waste a second life instead of being discarded- bridging my love for gardening with my experience helping the elderly.

After reaching out to several local senior living centers, I organized a recycling drive encouraging scouts from my troop to donate their recycled cans and bottles to be cleaned and repurposed to hold a new life. During the project, the seniors playfully paint their upcycled pots with each one becoming a small but meaningful contribution to a healthier planet. Today, these hand painted potted plants line the front window turning an area once surrounded by concrete and metal a little greener

Completing my project taught me how a single action or idea can spark a wave of change. Though I initially worried participants wouldn’t connect with the project’s goals, I was surprised by how eager everyone was to contribute their time and energy, ready to learn how even small steps can make a difference. In the future, I plan to encourage others to take that leap, turning simple efforts into lasting strides.
