Strengthening Diversity and Inclusion in Fiji

I was inspired to start the Diversity and Inclusion project to create a more inclusive scouting environment for children and leaders with special needs. Having seen the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, I felt a responsibility to advocate for their inclusion. The global emphasis on diversity in scouting motivated me to implement structured programs that empower all scouts and provide equal opportunities.
To execute the Diversity and Inclusion project, I formed a planning committee of scout leaders, stakeholders, and experts. We held meetings to create an action plan and conducted a community survey to understand the needs of students with special needs. We piloted a leader guide in schools and organized workshops to train leaders on inclusive practices. Feedback from participants helped refine our approach, ensuring the project effectively met community needs.
I learned that collaboration and diverse perspectives are essential for effective programs. Engaging with the community provided valuable insights, and being adaptable to feedback helped us refine our approach. Additionally, fostering an inclusive culture requires ongoing commitment and continuous training for leaders.
