Sri Lanka Sussex Scouts Re-Imagine Plastic

This community service was a part of the requirements for the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge. The webinar we had to introduce us to the badge was my motivation to do this project. I learned a lot about plastic pollution and how it affects us all after I started working for this badge. I realized how big an issue plastic pollution was and that we were the cause of it. But we can also be the solution to resolving it. This inspired us to plan a project that spreads awareness and inspire others too.

Our project was executed at our school, Sussex College Kandy in an area facing the main road. With the support of our principal, scout mistress, scout master, parents and troop members we completed the project with 13 inspirational wall paintings about marine pollution and spectacular plastic bottle creations. They include a troop name board and gateway made completely out of plastic bottles, decorated with more than 50 bottle planters. All activities were done abiding the health guidelines.
With this, we targeted not only the students & staff of the school but also the passers-by & local community. That was the main reason we chose the location to be facing the road. We aim to spread awareness about marine pollution through our wall paintings (specially because of plastic). With our bottle creations we hope to inspire & motivate other young minds like us to take action by showing them that there are creative solutions to the global issues we face.
The fact that we never ran out of plastic bottles through out our project and that most of the bottles were from one source, made us realize the gravity of the issue. We learned how the improper consumption of and irresponsible disposal of plastic waste affects the health of our planet. We also learned how the solution is also in our hands. It's just a matter of opening our eyes to see the truth and unlocking our creativity to find better and effective solutions.
