Solar project for sustainable living
The aim of the project was to sensitize the scouts of Seychelles on the importance of solar energy use. This followed a training organized by the WOSM of Africa in March 2023. There was the need to educate scouts and the people of Seychelles about the benefits of going solar, as this concept is still new and seem expensive to implement in the country. Through simple daily task, the scout learnt that solar use was environmentally friendly and without any cost.
Visit to the Public Utilities Power Station (PUC) . to learn about the function of the Station and how solar energy use would cut down the cost of LFO and HOF diesel use. Visit to Vallee de Mai Power point presentation on solar energy (history, solar equipment, ultra violet rays, etc..) By patrol, scouts design and make solar cooker, solar clock, solar song and poem, solar sunglasses, energy consumption games, solar experiment to explore how heat absorbs different colors and surface area.
Institutions that benefited from this project were: -The Grand Anse Primary School - The Public Utilities Corporation - The Valle de Mai Heritage Site - The Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) These institutions were able to sensitize scouts about the role of their institutions towards sustainable environment. The project was showcased in the national news Community The scouts would later share what they have learnt at home and with their friends and families.
To encourage Seychelles to build a sustainable environment. Scouts were able to learn hands on activities on how they can easily go solar at home. The project served as a training to other leaders on how they encourage other scouts in their troop to implement solar techniques.
