smart farming.

Kisii University Flamingo Rover Scouts project undertaken at Kisii Vocational and Rehabilitation Centre. The Rover Scouts led by Ndege Ngere took an initiative to start a smart agriculture project at the institution for the scouts in the institution. The project involves developing a vertical garden using waste plastic bags. The plastic bags are collected from household wastes sorted and reused. The vertical garden is constructed by mixing farm manure and soil at ratio 1:2. At the center a vertical layer of gravel is added for watering. Farm manure are organic and safe for human when growing vegetables. The vegetables planted includes; spinach, kales, spring onions and other herbs. The plants are placed at a distance of 15 to 30 cm and thus a single bag can hold up to 150 plants. This method is economical in terms of land and water use. The scouts of the institution can now eat healthy vegetables and earn income for the crew.
