Scouts for Literacy

Literacy is an important thing for a country because it encourages the opening of knowledge which has implications for the advancement of human resources. However, it is unfortunate that there are still some areas in Indonesia with low literacy levels, one of which is Buleleng, Indonesia. Based on datas, it was concluded that the literacy level of elementary school children decreased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic because children spent more time playing games on their smartphones.

This project is implemented in Desa Patas, Buleleng, Indonesia. This project was planned and designed by University of Indonesia Scout Movement (Pramuka UI). Before offline activities, the team surveyed and interviewed local stakeholders. The survey results are processed for program design. Offline activities are reading together with the read-aloud method, educational snake and ladder games, and making "Pohon Inspirasi" or tree of future dream. After offline activities, we will monitor the sustainability of the program and evaluate.

This project is expected to increase literacy interest and reading skills for elementary school students in Buleleng, Bali, Indonesia. This project will reach 2 points Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 4) Quality Education and 17) Partnership for the Global. The project also collaborates with the local community, local government, and Scouts.

I learned many things from this project. I learned that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on school students, especially in the literacy aspect. Literacy is important for education, so a low level of interest in literacy will affect the course of education. I am even more excited to implement a similar program for other areas in need.
