Scouts Go Solar Station @ JOTA JOTI Labuan 2022

As the Assistant State Commissioner for Global Initiatives, it is my responsibility to educate and spread awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals and various Betterworld Framework Initiatives such as Scouts Go Solar. Therefore, in conjunction with JOTA JOTI 2022, I took the opportunity to handle the Scouts Go Solar station for the State JOTA JOTI Celebration. My goal was to educate the Scouts about the SDGs, about clean energy and to get them interested in this topic.
The Scouts Go Solar station was held at Labuan International School. I decided to conduct an activity that did not take too much time and was suitable for all ages, so I did a Scouts Go Solar exhibition and a hands-on activity which was to make D-I-Y Sunglasses. I took the initiative to collaborate with local companies that would be willing to supply tinted films for the sunglasses and we were able to collect quite a large amount. We used the films to make the sunglasses, and everyone had fun.
We managed to advocate for the SDGs, spread awareness about the Scouts Go Solar initiative and also educate 367 Scouts about clean energy and why it is important to start using renewable energy. The sunglasses were a good way to help the Scouts make memories, have fun and they get to go home with something memorable and useful.
I learned that if you are brave to ask for help, you may be surprised. I never would have imagined local companies would be willing to supply the tinted films to us free of charge, and at a large amount too (for 400 Scouts). I was also very happy to see the Scouts have fun and some were even excited to wear the sunglasses. I'm sure this project has also made the participants advocates on their own too about the SDGs and Scouts Go Solar Initiative.
