Scouting for Peace and Unity in Malawi
As a refugee Scout living in Dzaleka Refugee Camp, I noticed that many rural communities had little access to Scouting and fewer opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills and friendships. I was also inspired by the need to promote peace and understanding between refugees and host communities in Malawi. My goal was to use Scouting as a tool to bring young people together, break barriers, build friendships, and create a more peaceful and inclusive community for everyone.
After meeting Bright Zimba, a community leader who supported the idea, establish the Light Scout Group in Mpalankwale village. I worked with fellow Scout leaders from Dzaleka Refugee Camp We organized Scout meetings, games, community service activities, and exchange visits between refugee and host-community Scouts, helping young people build friendships, promote peace, and learn from one another.
This project demonstrated the power of Scouting in promoting peace, inclusion, and social cohesion. I learned that consistent engagement, teamwork, and shared experiences can build trust and strengthen relationships between refugees and host communities. It also emphasized the important role of youth leadership and community partnerships in creating meaningful and lasting impact.
