Roots for Sedgefield
I wanted to make a positive difference in my local community while working towards my Discoverer task. I noticed that Sedgefield could benefit from more greenery, so I decided to organise a tree planting project along Jan van Riebeeck Street. It felt like a great way to combine environmental care with community involvement, and to get other Scouts and locals engaged in something meaningful.
I planned the project and reached out to Helia, who helped source 10 trees and confirm the planting site. I invited fellow Scouts, arranged tools and a first aider, and organised a gazebo, conservation banners, and a verge clean-up to help meet the service hour requirement. I also created a poster to promote the event. On Saturday 1 August 2026, we planted the trees, engaged with the community, and cleaned up the area from 09:00 to 14:00.
I learned the importance of planning enough activities to fill the required time, as our event ended earlier than planned. I also learned how valuable clear communication and coordination are - whether liaising with Helia, getting approvals, or keeping volunteers updated. Overall, I gained a better understanding of what it takes to organise a community project from start to finish.
