Renovate to Educate (rED)
Renovate to Educate is a NGO that my brother and I created and continue to keep moving forward. The purpose of rED is to repair damaged equipment such as chairs, tables, doors, fences, bookshelves and windows. Many public schools in the Philippines do not have the money to repair damaged items so it is very common for all broken school items to rot in the back of the school for years and years.
What rED does is receive donations from companies such as HSBC, Starbucks, the International School of Manila and purchase equipment such as nails, hammers, saws and paint. Then we plan a weekend build where representatives from those companies can visit the school and help repair the broken items. My brother and I usually help and supervise but we love to stand back and let those who gave money see what they have done. I personally do my best just to answer questions and let those who are new get as much first hand experience as possible. I am one of rED's official photographers so its wonderful when I can sit back and focus on capturing the moments that change the nation.
We have had dozens of succesful builds throughout the years and are continuing to expand. Thankfully to our partnership with Teach for the Philippines our popularity has grown dramatically and we will continue to do what we do best and renovate as many schools as possible.
We know that we can not fix every chair and table in the Philippines. Our public schools number in the thousands and we simply cannot get equipment and personal to some of the more remote places. But our goal is to inspire those children at the school and those workers from large industries to remember what is most important. If we can inspire those kids to focus on their education we will be bringing up a generation of nation-building people and why just focus on those kids? If working adults see the problems in our public schools and physically go out and do something about it, the change has already begun. We are always told that the new generation has to fix the problems of our country, but if that is true then we will just keep passing the blame for years. Every generation of Filipinos must work together to make our country move forward.
We are hoping that there is never an "end date" to our project because there is never an ending for nation building.
