Recycling trash into treasure #litterless

SCOUTS SA's Scouting-in-School programme in the Western Cape caters for children and youth living in the Cape Flats (townships) where pollution and litter are rife. The learners and youth leaders explored the Sustainable Development Goals and their roles in contributing to climate actions and how sustainable consumption can mitigate this. The project was supported by FEE and M&G South Africa.
Tailormade programmes were developed. Learners and youth discussed SDGs, reviewed their own habits with regards to waste and littering, learned how to dispose of waste correctly, recycle and upcycle. They put into practice the sustainable economy model by repurposing the trash they collected. They picked up litter within and around their schools and turned the trash into eco bricks, which were then upcycled into modular seating for their school playgrounds and libraries.
They learned that everyone has a role to play, how to make eco bricks and turn them into something usable for their school. They also realised that keeping their school clean is good for the environment and their health. "We collected plastic and then pushed it down into our bottles with sticks. We then stuck it together to make these chairs. It was fun to clean up our school, we were collecting other people’s trash to create something to treasure. It was like we were recycling for the world.”
