Reading Corner for Future Leaders (Venner House)
Zilukha MSS lacked a dedicated space where students could read, study quietly, and build a reading habit. When the Venner House structure was built with support from a Project of Japan, coordinated by the Disaster Management Coordinator and the School Scout Coordinator with school administration support, we saw a chance to turn it into an open library for the whole school.
Forty-five Scout advance team members initiated the construction of the Venner House Open Library.
The School Scout Coordinator and the Disaster Management Coordinator planned the project and obtained approval from the school administration. The Venner House structure, built with support from a Project of Japan, was developed into an open library. Forty-five Scout advance team members were selected to lead the work, and they cleaned the site, carried materials, arranged shelves and books, and set up reading spaces.
Through this project, we learned that teamwork and good coordination between the school, partners, and students can turn a building into something useful for everyone. We learned responsibility by taking the lead in preparing the library, and we learned that a facility only lasts when people care for it. We also realised how much a quiet reading space can do to encourage a reading habit. Most of all, we learned that Scouts can serve their school through small, practical actions.
