Project Orion VI - Rovering with Turtles

Project Orion is a long running volunteer project, started with the purpose to champion turtle conservation. Project Orion VI marks its sixth edition and of recent years has also included community development and other environment-based activities in its project agenda. The project is based in Kampung Mangkuk, a village in Setiu Province, Terengganu, Malaysia. The people of Terengganu have a tradition of consuming turtle eggs. The demand for turtle eggs has led to poaching and ultimately the endangerment of turtles in the state. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Malaysia spearheads the conservation of turtles by working with the government, village officials and locals to better manage the damage. Project Orion VI was led by 6 scouts from Singapore and Malaysia. It was a 14-day service project during the period of 14 – 27 June 2015. During my time as a young scout, my leader had shared about a pioneer scout project involving turtle conservation. A few years later as a Rover, I learnt more about the project and its causes. I was inspired through the sharing by participants of previous projects. I felt that organising the sixth edition of the project will inspire me to do more in the future. Six Venture and Rover scouts formed a team to run the project in 2015. We held meetings to pen down our plans and activities to be undertaken in the 14 days. The aims required funds, which we sough through means of fundraising sales and project presentations to gather donations. The following are some activities undertaken during the course of the project: - Visiting and assisting at a turtle hatchery - Participating in night beach patrols (to deter poachers) - Picking litter along the beach - Planting mangrove seedlings - Participating in cultural immersion activities - Assisting in the construction of a new house Looking back, we can see the improvements and impacts the project had on the wildlife and the villagers. I hope this project will inspire more scouts around the world to take up a project and champion a cause close to their hearts.
