Project Orion V - Rovering with Turtles

Project Orion V - Rovering with Turtles

Project Orion V was actually my first trip overseas with scouts. So what made me join this project to save turtles? So it all started with going for Scouts of the World Award Discovery Workshop that let me have more insight with regards to what are we doing in Project Orion. With the information shared, I feel inspired to be able to be part of the Project to help and save turtles. After the decision to embark on this journey to go on Project Orion, we left Singapore for Malaysia for a total duration of 2 weeks. Some examples of the things that we have done there are collating statistics of the hatchlings from each nest that is recovered, that includes dead baby turtles, undeveloped/half developed turtles. We helped out in the World Sea Turtle Day (WSTD) where we go around various towns and cities in Malaysia to set up roadshows to raise awareness regarding the conservation of the sea turtles and the various impacts that could happen if sea turtles go extinct. We also conducted night patrols around the beaches to protect any sea turtles that are laying eggs from poachers that are trying to poach the eggs and sell them to the markets. One of the biggest takeaway for me personally is that being able to stay in a kampung or village house is not really common in Singapore. Being able to live in a stilted house and waking up to the noise of animals like chickens, goats around the house. Its something that I won't be able to experience back in Singapore. After our 2 weeks in Malaysia, we organized a Workshop regarding sea turtles for the cub scouts to share with them as well as educating about how the numbers of sea turtles are dwindling as well as some fun facts about sea turtles and the ocean. After the workshop, we proceeded to have a beach clean up with the cub scouts at Pasir Ris Park.
