Pollinator Garden at Hayes Elementary School

Christine Lakatos, the art teacher, at Hayes Elementary requested a grant from the LPS Foundation to purchase supplies for a pollinator garden to increase the number of pollinators in the community and create a place where students can gather and learn about nature. The grant application was approved, and she requested the help of Cub Scout Pack 729 to assist in constructing this garden.

Members of Pack 729 along with their parents, and a few Pack 729 alumni gathered at Hayes Elementary on March 22nd to build the pollinator garden. They dug trenches in a previously laid out area, constructed the garden boxes, added topsoil, fertilized it with zoo poop from the Detroit Zoo, and added butterfly houses that they had previously built as part of their Baloo the Builder adventure. They put up the sign for the garden, and signed the back of it. The Scouts learned the basics of garden construction and how many hands can make light work.

A month later, on April 22nd, the following Earth Day, the community held a grand opening for the Bee Kind Pollinator Garden, where Mayor Kevin Coleman cut the ribbon to open thgarden and a certificate was presented to Pack 729 for their hard work.
