Plant A Tree and Grow With It
My motivation for organising the fruit tree planting initiative was to promote environmental conservation, food security, and sustainable living within Lilongwe Archdiocese. I wanted to help Scouts and young people understand the importance of trees in fighting climate change, improving biodiversity, and supporting healthy ecosystems. Seeing the environmental challenges in our communities inspired me to take practical action that creates long-term impact for both people and nature.
The project was executed through collaboration with Scout volunteers, school authorities, and church communities. We identified suitable planting sites, prepared the land, and planted selected fruit tree seedlings. We also conducted brief awareness sessions on tree care, environmental protection, and the importance of biodiversity. The initiative was successfully implemented with active participation and strong community support, ensuring sustainability beyond the planting day.
Throughout this project, I learned that environmental sustainability requires both practical action and community involvement. Tree planting alone is not enough; proper care, monitoring, and community ownership are essential for long-term success. I also learned that young people are powerful agents of change when given responsibility and guidance.
