"Piyawra" Project.
The "Piyawara" project was inspired by the urgent need to address plastic pollution in Sri Lanka, which significantly harms marine ecosystems and human health. So with my organizing and partnership, joining with MoP Team Sri Lanka, launched this initiative to raise awareness, promote sustainable practices, and make a tangible impact through environmental cleanups and recycling efforts. Our project highlights the power of community action and collaboration in tackling environmental challenges.
Plastic pollution harms ecosystems and health. As a top 10 country in plastic waste, Sri Lanka faces challenges. Piyawara addresses this with cleanups, awareness campaigns, and recycling. Phases: 1. Cleanup: Recycled 40,000 bottles with 2,640 man-hours. 2. Expansion: Partnered with Eco Spindles for broader recycling. 3. Distribution: Made and shared reusable products from recycled plastics.
We learned that community involvement and strong partnerships are crucial for success. Educating the public drives sustainable behavior, and expanding initiatives can address broader issues effectively. Clean environments boost tourism and local economies, and achieving clear results motivates continued action.
