Patrol Leaders Training Unit Course
Over the years Patrol Leaders Training Unit Course (PLTU) has demonstrated track record of producing skilled and well equipped Scout leaders. At the beginning of 2013, Limpopo Province requested the assistance from Gauteng for the establishment of skills base required for the recreation of a successful group of volunteers, who will in future be able to run Patrol Leadership courses in Limpopo, without support from other provinces.
The Gilkloof PLTU took place in the Tzaneen camp site, Limpopo. The Course was coordinated by Alison Griffiths, with the assistance of 3 adult leaders from Gauteng.
The sessions covered styles of leadership, qualities of good leaders and a number of short explorer incidents were given to the participants. A number of activities were done related to children’s rights and responsibilities, first aid, compass and mapping. This was a first time experience for the Limpopo Scouters and while they were hesitant at first as the time progressed they all got involved and really enjoyed the training.
For their service projects participants decided to paint a pre-school jungle gym at Kings Court School, picking up litter at a small village and removing alien vegetation to create a new campsite. All 3 projects were worthwhile and the patrols enjoyed themselves.
The first Gilkloof PLTU was a great challenge both in preparation and in the running of it. There is no question that this PLTU will make a significant difference in Tzaneen and should be repeated at least every two years. Other future plans discussed also included additional courses being attempted in Mpumalanga. The funds were used for transport, accommodation, catering and programme material.
