Patrol Leader Training Course
Western Cape Province held their annual Patrol Leadership Training Course (PLTC), The training was a great success with 46 Scouts attending, 2 of which received sponsorship from the MOP (Ackerman’s Family Foundation). The PLTC course is held annually in the Western Cape for junior Scouts who have just started taking on a leadership role in their team (called a patrol).
The course covers Scouting Skills needed at this level but mainly focuses on life skills such as, planning & organising, team work, team dynamics, dealing with conflict, Styles of leadership and Functional Leadership (model by John Adair), Values & Attitudes, Communication. These skills are brought across in facilitated group discussions, formal discussions as well as many team work exercises. The Scouts who received sponsorship were Brandon de Vos (age16) and Romano Cigano (age 15) and their Troop Scouter (Ingrid Webster) who described PLTC as a fun and information packed few days which introduces Scouts to patrol leadership, and the why's, where's and what's of a patrol.
On this course, the Scouts meet other scouts from different troops and areas, and learn to communicate with others, as well as learn what is expected of them as a patrol leader. They find out about things like patrol spirit and patrol name and identity, and patrol stars and the court honour. This course is a motivation after the training as everyone was eager to go back to the troop and lead their patrols.
