Parkdene Primary Literacy Discovery Project
The Scouting-in-Schools Team initiated this project to support learners across the Western Cape Flats who struggle with reading and language skills. Many learners lacked confidence in reading aloud or understanding basic language concepts. Motivated by the goal of “enhancing the capabilities of the children,” the team aimed to strengthen literacy foundations, improve pronunciation, and inspire learners to enjoy reading and learning.
At Parkdene Primary, learners engaged in key literacy activities: registering for library cards, visiting a library to learn book classification, finding information, reading and writing short stories, explaining parts of speech, using dictionaries, and listing six books they had read. These practical activities helped learners practice essential reading skills, build confidence, and develop a positive attitude toward learning despite some initial shyness.
This project showed that reading is essential for learning. Learners who struggled gained confidence and became more engaged in schoolwork. Hands-on activities like library visits, writing stories, and dictionary exercises made learning easier and enjoyable. Yeboneers noted that starting the programme earlier could increase impact. Teachers and learners agreed that the project was valuable, especially for those needing extra support with reading and pronunciation.
