Pacaltsdorp Primary building readers for life
The Scouting-in-Schools Team aimed to help learners at Pacaltsdorp Primary improve concentration, develop new skills, and build confidence through reading. Motivated by the goal to provide engaging literacy experiences, the Yeboneers focused on activities that encouraged participation, supported learners who struggled, and promoted teamwork and bonding, showing children that reading can be enjoyable and rewarding.
Learners participated in registering for library cards, visiting the library, exploring book classification, finding information, reading and writing short stories, learning parts of speech, and using dictionaries. Yeboneers guided learners throughout, helping them stay engaged and overcome challenges. Activities reinforced comprehension, concentration, and literacy skills, while also fostering collaboration and confidence among learners.
The project showed that even small interventions can make a difference. Some learners were initially bored or hesitant, but guidance and encouragement helped them participate. Yeboneers learned the importance of adapting explanations to suit learners’ needs and realized that consistent support fosters engagement. Overall, the project strengthened reading skills, boosted confidence, and highlighted how Scouts can positively impact learning.
