Operation One Day, 300 Trees in Anyama
Ivory Coast now has only two million hectares of forests, almost 90% less than in the early 1960s. This is alarming and requires a surge of citizen consciousness to restore plant cover and fight against global warming. We therefore decided, as part of the 1 day 50 million trees project across the entire Ivorian territory on the occasion of World Environment Day (June 05), to reforest by planting 300 Trees in Anyama with the support of the Ministry of Water and Forests.
We carried out the project in Anyama and planted the trees between the villages of Anyama-adjamé and Ahouabo. To carry out our activity, we contacted the heads of Water and Forests - Anyama section to inform them of our initiative and request the grant of tree seedlings for the project. After their favorable opinion, we launched a call to action on our various networks with scouts and non-scouts who wish to be useful and contribute to the restoration of the vegetation cover of our country.
We estimate the number of beneficiaries at more than 150 (corresponding to villagers). The aim of our project was to contribute to the recovery of our plant cover and to raise awareness among populations about the preservation of forests. Our action contributed to help the Water and Forestry agents to reforest this protected area which was threatened with commercialization by the villagers, but also to make the populations aware of the importance of trees and the need to plant and preserve them.
Contributing to the preservation and recovery of our plant cover has been a very enriching experience for us insofar as we have made new allies with whom we will develop new projects. This activity also taught us that to have more impact and mobilize more people to participate in our action, we must do it early. We practically issued the call to action the day before the event. This led to the low number of participants and the number of tree seedlings to be planted which was revised to 300.
