One Tree, A Million Benefits
Bamboos are useful natural resources that also contribute towards climate change mitigation. It is the aim of the Environmental Science Club of UKM to create one of the largest bamboo reserves in the country which will aid in reforestation steps in the university's forest reserve compounds as well as to maintain a sustainable resourcing of bamboos for future uses in any activities or programs.
This project was carried out in the Botanical Park of UKM with the cooperation of the Malaysian Bamboo Society. Participants planted 21 bamboo species around designated areas in the park.
Throughout the project, we saw an increase in greenery at the designated areas which in return will rebuild lost ecosystems of fauna. We were also able to build new friendship with each other; among the participants, guests and guest of honor. We are glad that the bamboos we planted may be harvested in future, adhering to the park's sustainability guidelines.
From the project, we were able to rethink the purpose of tree plantings, which is not just a mere planting activity, but how can it contribute towards sustainability of resources and the continuous support for natural environments.
