MY SERVICE FOR THE FLOOD RELIEF

MY SERVICE FOR THE FLOOD RELIEF

20 th May 2016 - 10.00 am to 8.00 pm Our family members and close friends travelled in a lorry to Mulleriya Raja Maha Vihara which was relief camp for Flood affected people. Our lorry had various types of Clothes, Bed sheets & blankets, Drinking Water, Biscuits, Toothbrushes and Toothpaste, Soap, all ingredients to make Tea and some Medicines. These items were bought from our own money. We had to use a lorry for transport because the road was underwater and smaller vehicles could not go at that time. We got off the lorry at Angoda Junction into the flooded road. My mother insisted that we get off the lorry in order to feel the pain of people who were affected by this disaster. The flood waters were over my knees. We walked along the road behind the lorry and chatted with those who were living around in the area. They said the water had been right up to the top floor of the two storey houses. There were some children playing and trying to swim in the flood water. We were sad that these children played in the dirty water and may get sick. We passed the Community Service Center in Angoda and the lorry went to the Mulleriyawa Raja Maha. We handed over all the goods in the lorry to the Chief Priest of the Vihara. The Chief Priest said that now the victims had enough goods but will require more once the go back into their houses. The Chief Priest thanked us immensely. We did not take many photographs at it will make those people who were affected very shy. Most of these people were from good homes but unfortunately had to face this unexpected disaster. We came back home very tired but satisfied that we were of service to the community in need. The time was around 8.00 pm.27 th May 2016- 3.00 pm to 11.00 pm At a Scouter’s meeting the District Commissioner had requested all the scouts of Colombo to join in the Flood relief operation organized by the Colombo District. The District collected many items to be distributed among those affected by the recent floods. Also one day the Secretary of the Colombo District Mrs. Avanthi Fernando made a special request to my mother to get donations of hygiene products and under clothing for the affected girls and women in the relief camps. My mother promised to raise Rs 10,000/- from friends and relatives. I gave all my money from my till amounting to Rs 2,360/- as I too am a girl and felt very sorry for them. The balance was given by my mother and her friends. On this day eight of us (girls) along with our parents & my sister went to the Colombo District headquarters to pack the goods, the Colombo District received from the various scout groups. The scouts from 60 th Col (DSS) & 42 nd (Royal) Col were also there. The DC and a few officials of the District committee were also there. We made large packs of various items suitable for each household. It took us a long time and work was completed only at 11.00 pm. We all returned home afterwards. 28 th May 2016- 8.00 am to 5.00 pm On this day, I went the Colombo Headquarters at 8.00 am. Many other scouts too had come. There were lots of Army Trucks to take the scouts to the flood affected areas. Some of the Scouts got into these Army trucks to go to the Wellampitiya area for the flood relief work. Our Sea Scouts were allocated to go to Kaduwela and distribute the parcels of essential items in the area. We got into the Army Jeep and went to the Kaduwela area. The DC and other officials also came to Kaduwela in their own vehicles. The scouts of 30 th Col Alethea too joined us at Kaduwela. We distributed over 100 parcels in the area. The District Commissioner thanked us for our efforts. We came back at 5.00 pm and was really tired. I was happy that I had done my best to serve those who were affected by this natural disaster.
