Mornington Peninsula Railway Re-vegetation Project

Mornington Peninsula Railway Re-vegetation Project

The Mornington Peninsula Railway Society preserves the old Mornington Railway Line in south-east Melbourne. The society operates a tourist railway between Moorooduc and Mornington stations. The MPRS is planning on extending the tourist railway from Moorooduc to Baxter in the near future. As part of this planned extension the MPRS is undertaking a major revegetation along the planned extension. 1st Tyabb Cub Scouts are helping plant indigenous grasses and shrubs along the rail line. Wallaby Grass and Kangaroo Grass are some of the most important natural grasses that existed in the area before European settlement. See info on grasses here. The Cub Scouts have planted grasses along a 1km stretch of the railway line. This is an important nature corridor as it re-links a number of scrub areas. The area is also a known habitat for the Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo who thrive on the seeds from these grasses.
