Meerkat Moot Clean Up

The Meerkats from 35th Pretoria Sea Scouts decided to join The Moot community clean up project on Saturday 18th March 2023. Even though we are only between the ages of 5 and 7, we wanted to do our part in keeping the area free from litter. We assisted in the clean up of the roadside and pathways used daily on a very busy road and access to the trainlines that had become overgrown.
We all met at 7:30 on Saturday morning in our hats and scarves in Kilner Park, Pretoria, gloved up and trash bags ready to be filled. With the help our parents , the Meerkats eagerly picked up litter which then turned into a treasure hunt as they continued to discover strange items that had been thrown away, for example nail polish, baking powder tins and mielie cobs, even a poor dead rat was closely observed.
The Moot is quite a large area and the particular section that was cleaned is on a very busy double road, which links two areas. The area also sees a lot of foot traffic and the pedestrians were unable to use the overgrown pathways and were walking in the road. Not only is the area cleaner now but also safer.
The Meerkats learned about not throwing litter out of the car window. They also learned that it is everyone's responsibility to keep things clean and tidy. We hope that more of our Meerkats and parent are able to join us for the next community clean up session.
